The law is clear for children shorter than 150 cm, and outside of town—including the entire route to Vienna Airport—there are no exceptions you can rely on. Most parents find this out at the worst possible moment—during a checkpoint somewhere near the border and two hours before departure. When is a car seat required, when is a booster seat sufficient, how does the regular transportation of children to school and extracurricular activities work, and what should you report to dispatch so the driver arrives prepared?

When Must a Child Use a Car Seat in a Taxi?

The rules are set by Government Regulation No. 554/2006 Z. z. and apply equally to both family cars and taxis. A child shorter than 150 cm must be secured in a child restraint system that is appropriate for the child’s physique and is approved in accordance with ECE Regulation No. 44 (Series 03 and later) or the newer Regulation R129.

There are three other rules that parents tend to forget more often:

A child under three years of age may not be transported in a seat that is not equipped with a safety system. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Children three years of age or older who are under 150 cm tall may not sit in the front seat without a safety system.

A rear-facing car seat should not be installed on a seat equipped with an active front airbag.

The law provides for one practical exception. If a vehicle does not have any child restraint systems or has only a limited number of them, a child aged three or older may be secured with a standard seat belt in the back seat, but only when driving within the town. Two words in this sentence determine everything else in the article: „in the village“ and „from the age of three.“.

Did you know? Slovak regulations do not provide for a specific exemption for taxi services. Within the city, taxis are eligible for the same tax relief as private cars, but outside the city limits, even that relief no longer applies.

That is why in GoTaxi24 When you place an order, we ask for the child’s age and height. This isn’t out of curiosity on the dispatcher’s part, but rather the only way to send a vehicle in which the child will actually be seated properly.

Car seat, booster seat, or seat cushion: what to ask for when placing an order

Car seats sold in stores today are classified based on the child's height. This classification was introduced by the UN R129 standard, known as i-Size, and in practice, there are three main categories:

approximately 40 to 85 cm, i.e., an egg for newborns and infants; the exact range varies by model

approximately 76 to 105 cm for toddlers and preschoolers

approximately 100 to 150 cm, which includes booster seats with backrests for older children

However, the older weight-based classification is still in effect and can also be found in the government regulation: Group 0 up to 10 kg, Group 0+ up to 13 kg, Group I from 9 to 18 kg, Group II from 15 to 25 kg, and Group III from 22 to 36 kg. Car seats approved under the ECE R44/04 standard may no longer be sold as of September 1, 2024, but they may still be used.

The Austrian automobile club ÖAMTC sums it up simply: when purchasing a car seat, it must meet at least the R129 standard; when in use, it must meet at least the ECE 44.04 standard. Older models found in the attic—whether they lack a label or have a cracked shell—are only for decoration in the car.

According to the ÖAMTC, only about one in three children is properly secured in a car.

When placing an order, it will help if you tell the dispatch center:

the child's age, approximate height, and weight

the number of children and whether there is an infant among them

pickup address, exact time, and, for airport transfers, the flight number

whether a stroller or a car seat adapter is also being transported

Tip: Instead of saying, „I’m bringing a small child with me,“ say, „Four years old, 105 cm, about 17 kg.“ The dispatcher will select the appropriate vehicle and type of equipment based on that information, and the driver will have it installed before arriving at your location.

Two children at once or a family with several suitcases also means a different category of car. A more spacious station wagon and a minivan from our fleet of vehicles They can fit more seats and luggage without anyone having to sit with a bag on their lap.

Regular transportation of children to school and extracurricular activities

Morning in Bratislava is predictably unpredictable. Anyone who stands on Einsteinova Street or in front of the Prístavný Bridge every day knows that the difference between leaving at 7:10 and 7:25 means twenty extra minutes of life. We wrote more about how the city breathes during rush hour in the article Bratislava rush hour through the eyes of drivers.

Regular child pickup works differently than a one-time ride. It's a routine, not a last-minute request:

the same time and place every day, scheduled in advance for a week or a month

a car seat or booster seat already set up in the vehicle, without having to explain it over and over again

The driver will wait until the child enters the school building or is picked up by a coach

The parent will receive confirmation that the ride took place, even if they are currently in a meeting

We also handle the trip back home, as well as rides to practice, music school, the swimming pool, or tutoring. Most parents start figuring this out once extracurricular activities begin three afternoons a week and work hours can’t be extended. Transportation from Bratislava to Vienna-Schwechat Airport It's about 50 kilometers long; most of the route follows the highway, and the trip crosses an international border. This changes the rules twice.

On the Slovak side, the aforementioned exemption does not apply. A highway is not a residential area, so a child under 150 cm tall must use a proper restraint system on this route, not just a regular seatbelt. Furthermore, there is absolutely no exception whatsoever for children under three years of age.

On the Austrian side, the Motor Vehicle Act (KFG) applies. Drivers must ensure that children under 14 years of age and shorter than 135 cm travel in a restraint system appropriate for their height and weight. Children 135 cm or taller must use a standard seat belt, Austrian government portal However, the car seat is recommended for children up to 150 cm. Failure to properly secure a child may result in an administrative fine and an entry in the Austrian Vormerksystem. A second entry within two years results in a mandatory course; further violations may lead to the revocation of a driver’s license, ÖAMTC warns.

Although Austrian regulations do provide an exception for transportation in taxis, this exception does not apply to school transportation or to rental vehicles with a driver, because the European directive allows an exception only for taxis, and under no circumstances does it allow a child to be transported in the front seat without a child restraint system. Whether a foreign vehicle falls under this exception is a legal debate you don’t want to have with a police patrol at 4:30 a.m. when your flight leaves in two hours.

And the patrols are there. Austria introduced border controls with Slovakia in October 2023 and has repeatedly extended them since then. Most recently, in June 2026 extended the inspections by another three months, while stationary checkpoints are gradually being replaced by flexible checks in the border area. In practice, this means that a vehicle can be stopped just before the border, at the border itself, or anywhere beyond it.

From our experience, we know what a situation like this looks like. A family with two children, a late-night flight, no car seat in sight, and a police patrol that simply won’t let the car proceed. At 2:00 a.m., there’s nowhere to buy or rent a car seat, and a replacement vehicle from Bratislava won’t arrive in five minutes. That’s exactly why, with every airport transfer The first question from our dispatch center is always the same: Are there any children traveling with you?

Attention: Please request a car seat when you place your order, not when you get in the car. The driver doesn't always have one in the vehicle „just in case“; he or she prepares it based on the specific order and the child's age and height.

The same applies in the opposite direction and when driving on M. R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava, where the route is shorter, but mostly runs outside the town along the D1 highway.

How to Order a Taxi with a Child Safety Seat in Bratislava

A taxi for children in Bratislava isn't an extra service—it's a regular ride that requires just one additional piece of information when booking. The process takes a minute:

Book your ride in advance; for airport transfers, ideally a day ahead.

Please provide the number of children, their ages, heights, and weights.

Please confirm the address, time, and flight number upon departure.

You can check the price in advance at price list, so it is not determined by traffic or the time of night.

The dispatch center operates around the clock, so early morning departures, returns after midnight, and afternoon pickups can all be arranged just as easily. The sooner you let us know about your children, the sooner the driver will know about them, too.

The seat was ready even before boarding

Book a ride with a child seat and head out with your kids without any unnecessary stress.

 Book a ride

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="gt-faq-item">

Does a child have to use a car seat in a taxi?

Yes.
